TDoR is to honor those who have been killed for being trans, out of hatred and prejudice. It doesn't include those who have taken their own lives because it was too much to bare. It doesn't include people who were severely beaten, just not to death, for being trans. I don't know if it includes those who died because doctors refused to treat them, those who died because they lost their jobs and homes and families (because we aren't protected from losing any of them) and couldn't afford food or a roof over their head. We're a fairly small community, but almost 180 people were killed over the course of a year just for being trans.
It's horrible. And what's more horrible is that it's such a common event to hear about a trans person's murder or brutal beating that it sometimes feels like it's fading into the backdrop, that it's normal and acceptable that people get killed and beaten for living their life the way I do.
