Activism or Originality

Journal Entry: Thu May 15, 2008, 6:11 AM

So, thanks to a random doodle I'm once again evolving a story idea. But there's a catch- basically, the gist is that the main character's trans way back in medieval times (poor girl, no surgeries and I doubt they had hormones).

so... now or the difficulty. Do I want this to be a pivotal part of hte story? Should it become some comment on how people treat transsexuals in general, possibly a tragedy since they happen all too often.

Or do I want there to be some other plot with actual action that's unrelated, adn this just happens to be her backstory, with the double-life aspect aiding things along?

I could try both... but then it'd accent on the latter. Meh. This is one problem about letting Pride inspire you- you end up realizing that you don't want to actually write about it.

Personally, I'd start with the plot, and the transsexuality being incidental - then see where it takes you.
Also, in mediaeval times men, especially in the upper classes, wore wigs, make-up and body-shaping clothing, so it may be that transsexuals were actually less noticeable than they can be today.

It depends on what class they are, and it also made it easier to pass, since it was more defined who wore what than these days. If you see someone in pants, think boy; in skirts, think girl sort of thing. ^^; well... long skirts. Honestly, through most of history, men were pretty dandy-ish if you look at it.

I dunno, I'll figure it out.

I think dandy-ish is quite generous of you ... I'd go for foppish, myself :D

I've never been sure of the difference, really. Is fop worse?

Well, alot of people say they're the same, but I say (partly on the grounds that if they were the same why would we need two words?) that a Dandy is flamboyant and enjoys wearing extravagant clothes, whereas a Fop dresses as a Dandy to show everyone how wonderful and handsome he (in his mind, at least) is - so for me Foppish has a large narcissistic element.

Haha, by that logic we'd have no synonyms. I think it's for rhyming. If dandy were the only word, you couldn't say "It's fop/finest in the shop" now could you? x3 (from Sweeney Todd) That works, though. :)

That sounds interesting, actually... A medieval transwoman/transman would certainly have troubles passing in some circumstances.

When did you get YOUR Internet?
:icondeadmeatgf:
Very true - and also meanings change over time - when they were in general usage they would have had different meanings, but as they age the differences become blurred and they end up meaning almost the same.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. And I can't imagine it would be at all accepted. I'm still not sure if I'll do it, or how I'd want to do it. It could be interesting to explore, but I'm a bit wary that people would end up not taking it seriously or something.
